Even though we are usually focused on the figure, our brains instinctively take note of the space around it, unconsciously using the information provided by the negative shapes to tell us about such things as the figure's movement or its proximity to us. Because we process images holistically, artists often use the trick of paying careful attention to the size and organization of the negative spaces to ensure a successful arrangement of positive shapes.
